The Music of the Royal Fireworks

Georg Friedrich Händel (1685-1759) was born in Germany, but lived and worked in Italy for a number of years. In 1712, he moved to London where he became a British citizen in 1727. In his works, Italian as well as English influences are evident. Händel wrote many Italian operas, but when his success in that field faded, he concentrated on composing English oratorios beginning in 1740.

The Arrival of the Queen of Sheba (for Brass quintet)

The Arrival of the Queen of Sheba, sinfonia for two oboes and strings that premiered in London on March 17, 1749, as the first scene of Act III in the oratorio Solomon. One of the last of Händel’s many oratorios, Solomon is rarely performed in its entirety, but Händel’s bright and lively "The Arrival of the Queen of Sheba" interlude is a widely appreciated processional set piece. It often was (and it continues to be) played during wedding ceremonies.

The Music for the Royal Fireworks (for Brass quintet)

The Music for the Royal Fireworks (HWV 351) is a suite in D major for wind instruments composed in 1749 under commission of George II of Great Britain for the fireworks in London's Green Park on 27 April 1749. The music celebrates the end of the War of the Austrian Succession and the signing of the Treaty of Aix-la-Chapelle (Aachen) in 1748. Acknowledging the occasion for which the piece was composed, Händel attached descriptive titles to the two central movements: the third movement is called “La Paix” (“The Peace”) in honour of the treaty itself, and the fourth is called “La Réjouissance” (“The Rejoicing”) to commemorate the mood of elation that followed.
